Owls (Grades 2–5)

Growing Independence, Confidence, and Capability

Our Owls program serves students in Grades 2–5 and is designed for children who are ready to deepen their academic learning, strengthen their independence, and take on greater responsibility within our school community.

You may notice that our Owls and Wolves programs overlap with some Grade 4 and 5 students. This is intentional. At this age, development can vary greatly from child to child. Some students thrive in a smaller, more nurturing environment with younger peers, while others are ready for increased independence, leadership opportunities, and academic challenges alongside older students.

Rather than placing students solely based on age or grade, we thoughtfully consider each child's academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs to ensure they are learning within the group that best supports their growth.

A Different Kind of Elementary Experience

The Owls program blends strong academic instruction with meaningful real-world experiences, nature-based learning, leadership opportunities, and individualized support.

Students continue building strong foundations while developing the confidence and skills needed to become increasingly independent learners. We believe education should be both rigorous and joyful, providing children with opportunities to challenge themselves while remaining connected to their interests, strengths, and passions.

Building Academic Excellence

As students move through the Owls program, academic expectations gradually increase while maintaining the supportive, individualized approach that defines The Owl's Nest.

Students engage in:

Literacy & Communication

Using evidence-based literacy practices and structured instruction, students develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, spelling, research, presentation, and communication skills. Students are encouraged to think critically, express their ideas, and communicate with confidence.

Mathematics & Problem Solving

Students build mathematical fluency and conceptual understanding through explicit instruction, hands-on experiences, investigations, games, and real-world applications. We focus on helping students understand mathematical thinking rather than simply memorizing procedures.

Inquiry, Science & Social Studies

Students explore meaningful questions, conduct investigations, develop research skills, and engage in projects that connect learning to the world around them. Curiosity and critical thinking are encouraged as students learn to ask questions, seek answers, and make connections across subject areas.

Executive Functioning & Learning Skills

Students continue developing organization, planning, time management, self-regulation, responsibility, perseverance, and problem-solving skills that support success both now and in the future.

Learning Through Experience

At The Owl's Nest, learning extends far beyond the classroom walls.

Growing Leadership and Responsibility

The Owls years are often a time when students begin stepping into leadership roles within our school community. They mentor younger students, contribute ideas, help solve problems, take ownership of projects, and develop confidence in their ability to make a difference.

We believe children learn best when they are trusted with meaningful responsibility and given opportunities to contribute to something larger than themselves.

Partnering With Families

As with all Owl's Nest programs, relationships and communication remain at the heart of our work.

Families receive ongoing communication, documentation, observations, and personalized feedback that provide a rich understanding of their child's academic, social, emotional, and personal growth.

Our goal is not simply to help students succeed academically, but to nurture thoughtful, capable, compassionate young people who love learning and feel confident in who they are becoming.
