Tuition Based Frequently Asked Questions
How Is Tuition Made Accessible?
We recognize that every family has a unique financial situation, and we believe accessibility is about more than simply lowering costs. It is about creating flexible, transparent pathways that help families plan and participate.
For a deeper understanding of how we approach affordability, sustainability, and educational investment, we encourage families to review our Tuition and Economic Philosophy, which outlines the values and considerations that guide our tuition model.
We support accessibility by:
Offering full-time, three-day, and two-day program options
Providing flexible payment schedules, including weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, and annual payment options
Equalizing payments throughout the year to create predictable budgeting for families
Applying deposits toward tuition rather than treating them as an additional fee
Presenting tuition as a weekly investment to help families understand and plan for costs
Bundling many program materials, supplies, and experiences into tuition and registration fees to reduce unexpected expenses throughout the year
Offering sibling discounts
Continuing to explore scholarships, community partnerships, fundraising initiatives, and charitable supports through the Roots and Wings Foundation
Accessibility is not only about reducing cost—it is about creating flexible pathways that allow more families to participate.
We also recognize that accessibility does not mean the same thing for every family. For some, accessibility is about cost. For others, it is about flexible scheduling, payment timing, learning environment, class size, educational philosophy, or finding a place where their child can truly thrive.
Our goal is to balance accessibility with sustainability so that we can continue providing meaningful educational experiences, fairly compensate educators, and maintain the environments, relationships, and opportunities that make The Owl’s Nest unique.
What Payment Options Are Available?
We believe accessibility starts with timing.
Every family manages finances differently, so we offer flexible payment schedules designed to align with your household’s cash flow and budgeting preferences.
Families may choose from:
Weekly payments
Bi-weekly payments
Monthly payments
Annual lump-sum payments
Payment withdrawal dates can often be adjusted to better match your family’s income schedule whenever possible.
Our goal is to reduce financial stress by creating payment arrangements that are predictable, manageable, and responsive to the realities of family life.
Why Is Tuition Broken Down by Week?
We choose to present tuition as a weekly investment because it often feels more accessible and easier to understand than a large annual figure.
Just as people may look at monthly payments when purchasing a vehicle or making another significant investment, breaking tuition into 45 weekly instalments helps families better understand how the cost fits within their household budget.
While tuition is ultimately an annual commitment, viewing it as a weekly investment allows families to focus on the value of the educational experience over time rather than being overwhelmed by a larger lump-sum amount.
Why Is There a Deposit?
The deposit serves a similar purpose to a first and last month’s payment when renting a home or securing a space in another program: it reserves your child’s place for the upcoming school year.
At The Owl’s Nest, we use the deposit to simplify tuition payments and make them more manageable for families. Rather than adding the deposit on top of tuition, we subtract the deposit from the annual tuition amount and then divide the remaining balance into equal payments throughout the year.
This approach helps:
Secure your child’s space in the program
Reduce the size of ongoing tuition payments
Create predictable, equalized payment amounts
Simplify budgeting for families throughout the year
The deposit is applied toward your child’s tuition and is not an additional fee.
What Does the Registration Fee Cover?
The registration fee helps cover the costs associated with preparing for a new school year and welcoming your child into the program.
Depending on the age and program of the student, the registration fee may contribute to:
Administrative and enrollment costs
Student records and onboarding
Welcome bags and start-of-year materials
School uniforms and branded items
Classroom supplies and specialized learning materials
Program-specific resources and experiences
Additional trips, outings, and experiential learning opportunities in our older programs
We aim to keep additional fees to a minimum throughout the year, so many start-up and program costs are bundled into the registration fee rather than being charged separately. As we continue to grow, our goal is to include even more materials, resources, and experiences within our tuition and registration structure, reducing the need for unexpected costs throughout the year.
Do You Offer Sibling Discounts?
Yes.
We recognize that investing in independent education for more than one child can be a significant commitment for families.
To support families with multiple children enrolled at The Owl’s Nest, we offer:
10% off tuition for the second child
20% off tuition for the third and subsequent children
Sibling discounts are applied to tuition only and do not apply to registration fees, deposits, or other applicable program fees.
Why Doesn’t Tuition Change for PD Days, Holidays, Breaks, or Student Absences?
At The Owl’s Nest, tuition is based on enrollment in the program for the school year, not on the number of individual days attended.
To support consistency and predictable budgeting for families, annual tuition is divided into equal payments throughout the year. This means that scheduled holidays, breaks, PD days, and occasional student absences are already factored into our annual tuition structure.
Equalized payments help us:
Maintain consistent staffing and small group sizes
Plan meaningful programming throughout the year
Provide stable, predictable tuition payments for families
Support ongoing preparation, assessment, and professional learning that benefits students
Just as in most independent schools, tuition reserves your child’s place in the program and supports the full educational experience rather than functioning as a daily fee for attendance.
How Do Snow Days Affect Tuition?
Rather than charging tuition based on a fixed number of school days, we adjust our annual tuition calculations to reflect the average number of snow days experienced over the past several years.
This means that a reasonable number of weather-related closures are already factored into tuition before the school year begins, allowing families to benefit from predictable, equalized payments throughout the year.
If the number of snow days exceeds the amount built into tuition, families will receive a tuition credit at the end of the school year. If fewer snow days occur than anticipated, the additional instructional days become a bonus for families at no additional cost.
This approach allows us to provide predictable payments while sharing both the risk and benefit of unpredictable winter weather fairly across our community.
Why Do You Invest So Heavily in Educators?
We believe that the quality of a school is deeply connected to the quality, experience, and stability of its educators.
At The Owl’s Nest, the majority of our operating budget is invested directly into educators, educational support staff, benefits, professional development, and the people who make our programming possible.
We believe children thrive when educators are supported, fairly compensated, and able to build long-term careers within our community.
Creating a learning environment that is both nurturing and intentional requires more than supervision. It requires educators who can thoughtfully respond to children’s needs, facilitate meaningful learning experiences, adapt to individual learners, balance structure with flexibility, understand curriculum, support behaviour, and build strong relationships with families.
We also believe that investing in educators helps reduce turnover and burnout. Consistency matters. Children thrive when they are surrounded by familiar adults who know them well, understand their growth over time, and remain part of the community year after year.
Why Do You Invest in a Nature-Based Campus?
Our students learn across a 75-acre nature campus that includes forests, fields, gardens, natural play spaces, and outdoor learning environments.
Maintaining access to these spaces is an intentional investment because we believe children learn best when they have opportunities to move, explore, take healthy risks, solve real-world problems, and build meaningful connections with the natural world.
Nature is not an occasional field trip at The Owl’s Nest. It is an integrated part of our educational approach and a learning environment we value deeply.
What Costs Are Not Included in Tuition?
We aim to keep additional fees to a minimum and include as many materials, resources, and experiences as possible within our tuition and registration structure.
However, some costs remain the responsibility of families, including:
Daily lunches and snacks
Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing, including coats, rain gear, boots, hats, mittens, and other seasonal items
Personal care items such as sunscreen and bug spray
Personal school supplies that students may wish to use
Student laptops in our older programs when required
Replacement uniform items, if needed
Optional extended trips, programs, or experiences that fall outside of our regular offerings
Because outdoor learning is a significant part of our program, we encourage families to invest in quality outdoor gear that allows children to comfortably participate in all seasons.
At the same time, we understand that puddles happen, weather changes, and unexpected situations arise. We maintain extra clothing, rain gear, boots, and other supplies to support students when needed and to help ensure children can continue participating comfortably in the day’s adventures.
What If My Financial Circumstances Change?
We understand that life circumstances can change unexpectedly.
If your family’s situation changes, we encourage you to reach out as early as possible. While we cannot guarantee financial accommodations, we are often able to discuss payment timing, available resources, or potential supports.
At the same time, staffing, programming, materials, and class placements are planned based on enrollment commitments. We ask families to select a program that they feel confident they can commit to for the school year whenever possible.
Open communication allows us to work together in a way that supports both your family and the sustainability of the school community.
Why Choose The Owl’s Nest Instead of a Free Public School?
Public education serves many children and families well, and we recognize the important role it plays in our communities.
Families who choose The Owl’s Nest are often seeking something different: smaller group sizes, individualized support, strong relationships, daily access to nature, experiential learning, and an educational experience that aligns closely with their family’s values and goals.
If you are exploring independent education, it is likely because you are looking for something specific for your child. For many families, the greatest question is not whether there is value, but whether that value fits within their financial reality.
We encourage families to consider not only the cost of tuition, but also the long-term value of an educational environment where children are known deeply, supported intentionally, and given opportunities to grow academically, socially, emotionally, and personally.
For many families, choosing The Owl’s Nest requires sacrifice and intentional financial planning. While tuition can feel like a significant investment, many families find that the benefits extend far beyond the classroom and positively impact their child’s confidence, well-being, and overall educational journey.
How Do You Keep Tuition Sustainable?
Providing high-quality education requires careful planning and long-term sustainability.
In recent years, we have worked hard to stabilize tuition costs and create greater predictability for families. Our goal is to keep tuition as consistent as possible for the coming years while continuing to invest in educators, programming, learning environments, and student experiences.
We support this goal through thoughtful budgeting, enrollment growth, fundraising initiatives, grants, community partnerships, and the ongoing development of the Roots and Wings Foundation.
By balancing accessibility with sustainability, we can continue providing meaningful educational experiences for years to come.
What Is the Return on This Investment?
Every child is unique, and educational outcomes cannot be measured by grades alone.
We hope families see the return on their investment through children who are confident, capable, curious, connected, and engaged in their learning.
We hope they experience strong academic foundations, meaningful friendships, emotional well-being, leadership opportunities, resilience, creativity, a connection to nature, and a lifelong love of learning.
Ultimately, the greatest return on investment is not a report card. It is a child who feels known, valued, supported, and inspired to become their best self.
