The Owl's Nest Preschool Program is a unique nature-based learning experience intentionally limited to just five children per day. This small group size allows us to build strong relationships, tailor learning experiences to each child, and create a calm, connected environment where children can thrive.
Located at Reroot Organic Farm in Harriston, Ontario, our preschoolers spend their days immersed in nature, exploring forests, fields, gardens, animals, creeks, and natural play spaces. Every day offers opportunities for discovery, wonder, movement, and meaningful connection.
Our program doesn't fit neatly into a single educational philosophy or box. Instead, we thoughtfully draw inspiration from child development research, nature-based education, Reggio Emilia, Montessori, play-based learning, and emergent curriculum approaches.
We believe:
Children are capable and competent.
Learning happens best through relationships, play, and authentic experiences.
Every child learns differently.
Curiosity is a powerful teacher.
Childhood should be honoured, not rushed.
Our program evolves alongside the children who are part of it. Their interests, questions, discoveries, and developmental needs help shape the learning experiences we create together.
At The Owl's Nest, children learn by doing.
Whether they are building shelters, caring for animals, creating art, investigating insects, baking, climbing, storytelling, gardening, or exploring the forest, children are developing important foundations for future learning.
Through play and hands-on experiences, children naturally develop:
Confidence, self-regulation, empathy, kindness, communication, problem-solving, resilience, and healthy relationships.
Gross motor skills, fine motor skills, coordination, balance, risk assessment, sensory integration, and physical literacy.
Critical thinking, creativity, decision-making, language development, concentration, curiosity, planning, and problem-solving.
Children are encouraged to participate, contribute, and challenge themselves in ways that feel meaningful and appropriate for their individual stage of development.
We believe learning happens best when children feel safe, connected, empowered, and respected. Educators work alongside children to gently expand comfort zones while honouring each child's unique needs, personality, and readiness.

Our preschool program differs from traditional childcare. We are active, engaged, and often on the move throughout the day. Children spend significant time outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions. Rest, quiet moments, and individual needs are respected, but families should expect a dynamic, hands-on, nature-rich experience.
Communication and documentation are shared regularly so families can remain connected to their child's learning journey.
